Wine Box Auction 21st June 2006

Our first Wine Box Auction was a great success!

All boxes were sold and we raised almost $10,000. It was a great night, thanks to our generous sponsors Riverside Wines and to our business sponsors for each box! A special thanks to all the artists who generously donated their work to us.

1. Eddie Budd

Bandage Oil Paint

"A basic abstraction rendering the twilight zone between Healing and Harm"

Eddie is a survivor of mental illness and his work draws its strength from his experiences of this process. He held his first solo show last year at Mosaic, which was very successful.

Liz's multi media installations in the Hastings CBD are well known, as are her public sculptures at Hawke's Bay events. She has exhibited her paintings, ceramics, drawings and photography in many exhibitions throughout New Zealand.

3. Des Robertshaw

Still Life with Urns

Des has a long list of exhibitions throughout New Zealand and in the major art centres of the world. His work is well known and sought after in New Zealand by those people with a passion for interior design. Many of his artworks have been transformed into limited edition prints.

Wine Shrine Mixed media

" When a person is inclined to stick thousands of little things to other bigger things, is it any wonder that a medicinal glass or two of wine is in order?"

Jo has been producing innovative sculptural work, paintings and prints for a number of years and exhibiting in solo and group shows. Her work was most recently selected in the 2006 Norsewear Award. An inventive sculptor and painter whose work combines interesting ideas with innovative uses of materials.

6. Linda Bruce

"I was thinking about growing Wine and about growing Mosaic - I was involved in the Focus Group there and wanted Mosaic to become a fantastic place"

Linda has exhibited widely throughout New Zealand, most recently in Earthbound at the Hawke's Bay Exhibition Centre. She also won the award for sculpture in the 2005 Hawke's Bay Review

7. Denise Wilkinson

Untitled Still Life Acrylic

Denise is best known as the controversial winner of a merit award for her cut-out Kid's page drawing entry in the 2004 Norsewear Award. Her series of work using actual paint by numbers art kits comments on the commercial nature of the art world.

8. Terence McKenna

Strange Flower with even Stranger Onlooker Oil

Terence, as well as currently being the Manager at Mosaic has produced many paintings and drawings over the last 15 years and exhibited throughout New Zealand in solo and group shows. In 2000 he completed a major commission for the Hort Research Building in Havelock North as well as being the Cranford Charity Auction artist for that year.

9. Rhys Pritchard

Rhys held his first solo exhibition last year at Mosaic. Combining creative ideas and a fastidious approach to painting, Rhys' work is attractive and approachable.

Lex has had numurous exhibitions in New Zealand and abroad. His quirky figurative works contain disjointed narratives that creates a surreal atmosphere. "The chosen subjects involve the balance between universal principles and individualized myopia. These are moments frozen in time attempting to interpret the world around by being playful, provocative and evocative."

Brent has had numerous exhibitions and mural commissions, including his piece for the 2004 Cranford Charity Wine Auction. His work features fine drawing and use of colour to achieve his imaginative vision.

Fane is renowned for his witty works, graphic design and printmaking. Exhibiting extensively throughout New Zealand, his most recent solo show was of inventive neo-cubist re-constructions at Black Barn Gallery. An artist with wide ranging talents and a creative pedegree linking back to BLERTA days.

13. Mary Vaughan

Grapes to Wine- Enjoy Mixed Media

Mary enjoys the act of creating whatever the medium. Here her idea has focussed on the brown colours of the earth from which the vine grows, and finishing with the end product...

"I came to Mosaic Creative Space by chance through a friend and haven't looked back since. I have so much painting in me I do not know when I am going to finish it all or where it will lead me. I only hope I can carry on till I'm 115 years old, that is if the place does not run out of paint and paper."

14. Martin Poppelwell

Study for a Wine Box Paint, Ceramic, Paper, Ink

A contributor to contemporary art discourse through his visual and writen works on a national level, Martin has had a large number of exhibitions throughout New Zealand and Australia, and been selected in exhibitions by the major art instititions in this country. He has had several successful exhibitions in the Bay in the last few years.

This work also features a work on paper on the rear of the box using his recent visual language of assembled signs and scraps of paper.

17. Blair Kyle

Monster in a Box Oil

Blair has had several solo and group shows at Mosaic, and his inventive and quirky creations coming from "left field" amaze and entertain viewers. The kind of art other artists wish they could make!

"Firecracker, Chocolate Bar, Cockroach, Round Shape: The one with the big eyes is a Monster! It could be said that his signature motif is the creepy crawly... "I've done so many bugs!"

18. Ricks Terstappen

Ricks' inventive and quirky sculptures have been installed as commissions in many parts of Hawke's Bay and New Zealand. His work is also held in many private collections. Most recently his collaborative work is a feature of the re-furbishment of the Hawke's Bay Opera House.

20. Clare Plug

Clare's work has been exhibited widely throughout NZ, and in Australia, USA, Canada, and Europe, and been published in numerous textile magazines. Remarkable for its fusion of visual complexity and quiltmaking, it crosses boundaries into new territory for both. Clare is also the winner of international awards and the latest recipient for the Antartic Arts Fellow for 2006/07.

This work contains a beautifully dyed and constructed picnic quilt and cover cloth, as well as the original winebox.
