Rhys is an Napier artist who is not frightened to use a mixture of materials to produce a finished art work. The result is usually a piece of art that draws your eye in, resisting the temptation to touch the variety of textures and combinations of symbols that are found woven together in his work.

The bold use of colour, with a stained glass effect is a signature in his work. Preferring not to get stereotyped into genre, Rhys's interests are varied between oil painting, printmaking and sculpture, producing work that combines all of these media.

Motivations for his work vary, swinging from the symbolism of the pacific to the New Zealand and celtic cultures. “I go by something because I like it, patterns and nature. You look at a painting and see hidden meaning, with me you look at it and it is what it is”.
