Living with a disability PDF Print E-mail
Written by Peter Moodie

I've never really thought about living with a disability before. To me I'm just like everyone else.

That may sound strange to some of you but it's true. I was born with the disability Cerebral Palsy, and that was it as far as i was concerned. I have never known anything else, so i really don't have anything to compare with. I feel sorrier for people who become disabled later in life as a result of accident or illness, they have known what it is like to be able bodied whereas i haven't.

I have been frustrated at times, many times, especially not being able to communicate clearly and easily with speaking and writing. As most of those that know me know it is damn hard work trying to have a conversation with me.

The worst thing you can do is nod your head and pretend you can understand what i am saying. I can see it in your eyes that you do not have a clue what i am on about. There are some here like that!

As most of you know I love my sport, watch anything, and there's the rub! I would have loved to participate in able-bodied sport instead of watching it, although i did win two gold medals in the national disabled games here in Napier in 1975.

I would love to do ballroom dancing properly, holding the girl in my arms. I also waste a lot of energy having to do things over again when I don't do it the first time, like pushing the wrong keys on the keyboard as i'm doing now!!!

All in all I've had a great life so far, thanks to my Mum and Dad and my sister Barbara, who all treated me normally when i was growing up.

Thanks for listening and God bless.
